Embracing the Instinct to Grow
We were meant to soar. Every one of us has a built-in instinct to continue growing and expanding, but many of us have forgotten this, have gotten comfortable, and have stopped growing. To me, this is the number one cause of misalignment, disease, depression, and other challenges in life because we know something is wrong, and we know something is off, so we do whatever we can to try to wake ourselves up to the fact that there is more to life.
The Consequence of Stagnation
What happens when a tree stops growing? It dies. Trees do not reach a point where they say, “I am tall enough and big enough, so I am going to stop now and just stay this way for the next 30 years.” It is impossible because trees were created to grow. The crazy part is that because trees do not have brains to question this, they just keep on growing and never ever question it.
The Human Dilemma
However, humans have a flaw—or you could even call it a curse—that someone created a long time ago: the idea that we are supposed to reach a “cruising altitude” and maintain that life for a sustained period. A human who is not growing becomes frustrated, seeks out addictions or other things to try and find meaning, but the simple solution is to keep growing.
Rediscovering the Energy of Growth
This is why people get so energized when they go back to school, get a new job, start a company, or make lifestyle choices that cause them to expand, grow, and step outside of their comfort zones.
If you feel something is off, if you feel frustrated or down, or if you do not feel like yourself, ask yourself a simple question: When did I stop growing? Why did I stop growing? And most importantly, what would it look like if I started a plan of massive growth in my life?
Finding New Purpose
I recently went through a period in which I just felt numb, felt like I was accomplishing goals but that they had no meaning. I realized that I had gotten comfortable. For the last several years, I have done the same thing, made the same amount, and lived in the same house. Without realizing it, or without any conscious awareness, I had just stopped growing. I told myself, “This is good enough,” and in that lay the problem.
I might be 54, but baby, I am just getting started. We just finished preseason, and now we are on our way to the Super Bowl. For a short period of time, I had forgotten that, lost sight of it, and thought it was okay to coast, to stay the same. The reality is, it is not. As soon as I started growing, expanding, and doing, everything shifted and everything changed.
You Are the Super Bowl
The reality is, many people like to go to the Super Bowl and watch other people do amazing things. But the reality is, I am the Super Bowl—and so are you.
